New Music From Lee Hoiby
Scott LaGraff

Abstract Lee Hoiby, arguably America‘s greatest living song composer, is
perhaps best known for his songs from the 1970s and 80s, but he
continues to make significant contributions to the modern song
repertoire. This presentation will give a brief overview of Hoiby‘s life and
oeuvre before turning to a discussion and performance of three of his most recent song compositions:
Chants d‘Exil (2002), poetry by Marcel Osterrieth; Winter and Summer (2005),
poetry by Ricardo Castro, and his latest vocal work, "Private First Class Jesse Givens" (2006). a musical setting of a letter from a soldier slain in Iraq to his family. Other recent song compositions will also be breifly discussed.
