Abstract

James Madison University announces a new joint Masters of Musical Arts/Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Performance, Pedagogy and Literature to address concerns expressed by Music Administrators across the country in discussions at the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the National Association of Music Executives of State Universities (NAMESU) that graduates of doctoral programs, while well-trained in performance, have not been well-prepared pedagogically in either primary or secondary teaching areas. This presentation, given by the Director of Graduate Studies at the J.M.U. School of Music, will explain how the new program (to begin in Fall, 2007) will train doctoral students in pedagogical methods in performance (or conducting for conducting majors) as well as in secondary areas such as music theory, music appreciation and world music. Highlights of the degree will include two courses in analytical techniques, three seminars of a topical nature in music history and one seminar in ethnomusicology. Music literature laboratories to accompany the seminars will ensure the breadth of repertoire crucial to future college educators, and courses in classroom and studio pedagogy will include supervised teaching.  The main goal of the new program is to prepare graduates of the D.M.A. at James Madison University to be competitive in the current job market in which hiring colleges and universities favor candidates who teach outside of their specialties.
