Music Industry Outreach III--Career Paths of Successful Musicians: Classical and Popular Music, Law, Technology, Journalism
E. Michael Harrington

Abstract The “Career Paths Of Successful Musicians - Classical and Popular Music, Law, Technology, Journalism” workshop will feature insights from active participants in careers outside of teaching. The workshop will include musicians with classical and/or popular expertise who have developed unique careers in fields related and unrelated to music and entertainment. Specific examples of successful “crossover” career paths and career hybrids – going from classical music to hip hop, rock music to country, classical to world music, or gospel to hip hop, etc. – will be discussed in detail. Other topics will include occupations that are at the periphery of music performance and composition, including management, promotion, publishing, promotion, agents, business, journalism, technology-related and legal affairs with respect to music, video and new business models.
